IT’S TIME TO CHECK YOUR DECK

April 10, 2023 · BY: WOLF HOME PRODUCTS

There are an estimated 40 million residential and 10 million commercial decks in the United States; half are more than 20 to 30 years old. Is your deck one of them?

May is National Deck Safety Month, and Wolf Home Products is proud to be a 2016 Deck Safety Ambassador. This month, before planning your family barbecues and summer parties, check your deck to ensure that it is safe for another year of outdoor entertaining.

The North American Deck and Railing Association has created a great checklist for homeowners evaluating their own decks. Here are a few key tips:

  • Knock on Wood – Is your deck made of wood? Make sure to check several points, like the deck boards, support posts and stairs, on your deck to make sure the wood is sound throughout the structure. Focus special attention on areas that could remain damp or be exposed to water. If wood feels soft or spongy, there may be decay.
  • Clean Sweep – Your annual check is also a great time for some deck maintenance. Clear off any debris. Check for mildew or mold, and clean with a cleaner or solution specially designed for your deck type.
  • Trim the Trees – Take a look at the trees surrounding your deck. Are there any tree limbs that could fall and damage the structure? Remove any decaying or low-hanging branches that could impact your deck.
  • Go Pro – Evaluating your own deck should not take the place of a professional evaluation. NADRA recommends all homeowners have an annual deck inspection from an accredited professional, like a deck builder or a home inspector.
